Albertina Modern

Albertina Modern opened in 2020 as the contemporary wing of Vienna celebrated Albertina museum, devoted to modern and contemporary art from the end of the Second World War to the present day. It occupies the Kunstlerhaus on Karlsplatz, a grand historicist exhibition hall built in the 1860s as a gift from the Emperor Franz Joseph to the city artists, now elegantly restored and modernised. The new institution draws on a vast holding of more than sixty thousand works by some five thousand artists, allowing it to mount ambitious exhibitions of painting, sculpture, photography and installation. Austrian post-war art is a particular strength, with major figures of movements such as Viennese Actionism well represented, set alongside international contemporary names. Housed in a building that is itself a monument of nineteenth-century Viennese architecture, the museum balances its historic shell with spacious, contemporary galleries, providing a fitting stage for art that ranges from the radical experiments of the post-war decades to the work of living artists. The Kunstlerhaus had a long and varied life as an artists association and exhibition venue before falling into decline, and its renovation, backed by a private patron, rescued a landmark and gave the Albertina the room to expand its reach into the modern era. Its location on Karlsplatz, near the Musikverein, the great baroque Karlskirche and the city ring of cultural institutions, places it firmly within Vienna dense artistic centre, easily combined with the many other museums nearby. For visitors interested in art since 1945, Albertina Modern offers a major collection and changing exhibitions in a beautifully restored historic building, complementing the older Albertina focus on graphic art and classical modernism with a confident step into the contemporary. The museum opens daily with tickets available online or at the door, and a combined ticket with the main Albertina lets visitors take in both the classical and the contemporary collections. Its location on Karlsplatz, beside the Musikverein and the baroque Karlskirche and a short walk from the State Opera and the Ringstrasse museums, places it at the heart of cultural Vienna, so it slots easily into a day spent exploring the city dense concentration of galleries.
