Dom Tower

Soaring above the rooftops of Utrecht to a height of more than one hundred and twelve metres, the Dom Tower is the tallest church tower in the Netherlands and the enduring symbol of the city. It was built between 1321 and 1382 as part of the great cathedral of Saint Martin, to a design by John of Hainaut, and its three diminishing stages, two solid square blocks crowned by an airy openwork lantern, represent a high point of Gothic ambition. Remarkably, the tower has stood as a freestanding structure since 1674, when a violent tornado tore through the city and brought down the unfinished nave of the cathedral, which had never been completed for lack of money. The fallen section was never rebuilt, leaving the tower separated from the surviving choir by an open square, the Domplein, whose coloured paving today traces the outline of the vanished nave. The tower rises from the very spot where Utrecht itself began almost two thousand years ago, on the site of a Roman frontier fort, giving it a claim to stand at the historic heart of the country. Visitors willing to climb its narrow spiral staircase of some four hundred and sixty-five steps are rewarded at the top with a panorama that on a clear day stretches as far as Amsterdam and Rotterdam, and along the way they pass the great bells that have rung out over the city for centuries. Because of its exposed height the tower has needed regular restoration throughout its long life, the most recent campaign finishing in 2024 after several years of careful work on the weathered exterior. The Dom Tower is more than a viewpoint, for it embodies the medieval wealth and faith of Utrecht and the dramatic accidents of history that left it standing alone, and a climb to its summit ranks among the most rewarding things to do in the central Netherlands. From its summit the relationship of the tower to the lost cathedral becomes clear, with the choir standing isolated beyond the open square and the coloured paving below tracing where the nave once stood. The carillon housed within rings out over the city on the hour and during regular concerts, its bells a familiar sound to the people of Utrecht. Guided tours, beginning at the nearby tourist information point, lead small groups up through the stages of the tower, weaving in tales of fire, storm and faith, so that the climb becomes a journey through seven centuries of the city history as much as an ascent to a view.
