St Martin's Cathedral

The great Gothic church that gives Utrecht its skyline its defining feature, St. Martin's Cathedral, known to locals simply as the Domkerk, was for centuries the most important church in the Netherlands, the seat of the bishop who once held sway over much of the country. Begun in the thirteenth century to replace earlier churches on a site of worship dating back to the very origins of the city, the cathedral was built over many generations in the soaring French Gothic style, with a vast and lofty interior intended to inspire awe and to reflect the power of the medieval church. It was once a single grand complex with its famous tower, the tallest church tower in the country, but a violent tornado in 1674 brought down the unfinished nave that connected the two, and that section was never rebuilt, leaving the surviving choir and transept standing apart from the tower across an open square, a curious and poignant reminder of the disaster. Inside, the cathedral impresses with its towering vaulted ceilings, its slender columns and the cool light falling through tall windows, while monuments, tombs and remnants of medieval decoration survive despite the ravages of the Reformation, when, as elsewhere in the Netherlands, the church was stripped of its Catholic ornament and turned to Protestant worship. A tranquil cloister and garden adjoin the church, offering a peaceful retreat in the heart of the busy city, and the building remains an active place of worship as well as a venue for concerts that make use of its magnificent acoustics. Standing on the spot where Utrecht itself began, on the site of an ancient Roman fort, the cathedral embodies nearly two thousand years of the city history and centuries of religious and architectural ambition. For visitors, it offers both a serene and beautiful space for quiet reflection and a powerful sense of the medieval grandeur of a city that was once the spiritual heart of the Netherlands. For the energetic, the cathedral is inseparable from its towering companion across the square, and many visitors combine a look inside the church with the long climb up the great tower, from which the whole city and the surrounding countryside spread out below. Together, the church and tower form the historic and spiritual core of Utrecht, and a visit conveys both the soaring ambition of the medieval builders and the dramatic twists of fortune, from Reformation to natural disaster, that have shaped this remarkable monument over the long centuries of its existence.
