Nobel Peace Center

Devoted to the most famous of all the Nobel prizes, the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo tells the story of the Peace Prize, its founder and the men and women who have won it, in a setting that combines a handsome historic building with strikingly modern displays. The centre opened in 2005 to mark the centenary of Norway independence and stands in a former railway station beside the city hall and the harbour, a fitting location since it is in Oslo, not Stockholm, that the Peace Prize is awarded each year, in accordance with the will of the Swedish inventor and industrialist Alfred Nobel. Nobel, who made his fortune from dynamite and other explosives, left instructions that much of his wealth should fund annual prizes recognising those who had conferred the greatest benefit on humanity, and the Peace Prize, granted by a Norwegian committee, has become perhaps the most coveted honour in the world. Inside, the centre uses film, interactive installations, photography and changing exhibitions to explore the lives and achievements of the laureates, from campaigners against war and champions of human rights to peacemakers, humanitarians and organisations working to better the world, presenting their stories and the often difficult choices behind the awards. A continually updated digital display allows visitors to learn about every laureate in the history of the prize, while temporary exhibitions delve into particular conflicts, causes or recent winners, frequently touching on the most pressing issues of the day. The centre also reflects on Nobel himself and on the enduring questions surrounding war, peace and the responsibilities of those who hold power. Beautifully placed on the waterfront in the heart of the Norwegian capital, close to the city hall where the prize is presented each December, the Nobel Peace Center offers visitors both an engaging and thought-provoking museum and a window onto humanity ongoing struggle for a more peaceful world. The centre also serves as a venue for debate and reflection, hosting talks and events that connect the ideals of the prize to current affairs, and its shop and cafe make it an easy and pleasant stop on a tour of the waterfront. By gathering the stories of so many who have worked for peace under one roof, it offers visitors not only a record of past achievement but an invitation to consider their own part in building a better world, making it one of the most thought-provoking attractions in Oslo.
