ArtScience Museum

Shaped like a great white lotus blossom rising from the waters of Marina Bay, the ArtScience Museum is among the most architecturally striking buildings in Singapore, its ten upturned petals housing a museum devoted, as its name suggests, to the meeting point of art, science, culture and technology. Designed by the celebrated architect Moshe Safdie as part of the vast Marina Bay Sands development and opened in 2011, the building is itself a work of art, its sculptural form gathering rainwater through an oculus at its centre to feed a pool below, a poetic union of design and sustainability. Inside, the museum mounts a constantly changing programme of major touring exhibitions that range across the worlds of art, design, science and popular culture, having shown everything from the treasures of great civilisations and the work of famous artists to explorations of dinosaurs, space travel, fashion and the digital age, so that no two visits need ever be the same. Its most beloved fixture, however, is a permanent and immersive digital installation created by a renowned collective of artists and technologists, a sprawling, dreamlike environment of light, projection and interactivity in which visitors wander through forests of glowing flowers, cascading digital waterfalls and rooms that respond to their movements, blurring the line between the visitor and the art. This fusion of cutting-edge technology and sensory wonder has made the museum a favourite for families and a magnet for photographs, while its temporary exhibitions draw crowds eager to catch the latest blockbuster show. Set on the waterfront amid the hotels, gardens and skyline of the bay, easily combined with the other attractions of the area, the museum reflects the ambition of Singapore to position itself at the crossroads of creativity and innovation. For visitors, the ArtScience Museum offers both a feast for the eyes in its very architecture and an ever-shifting menu of exhibitions that celebrate the curiosity and ingenuity of the human mind.
