Cloud Forest

Step through the doors of the Cloud Forest at Gardens by the Bay and the tropical heat gives way to cool, misty air and the roar of one of the tallest indoor waterfalls in the world, cascading down a mountain swathed in greenery. This vast glass conservatory, opened in 2012 as one of the twin cooled domes that anchor the celebrated waterfront gardens, recreates the conditions of a tropical highland, the cool, humid and perpetually cloudy environment found on mountains far above sea level, complete with the lush vegetation that clings to such heights. At its heart rises an artificial mountain some thirty-five metres tall, clad from base to summit in ferns, orchids, pitcher plants and other species of the cloud forest, and crowned by the great waterfall that tumbles down its face in a curtain of spray. Visitors ascend by lift to the top and then make their way down through a series of aerial walkways that wind around and through the mountain, passing hidden grottoes, displays of glittering crystals and minerals, and ever-changing views out over the verdant interior, while the fine mist drifts through the cool air. Along the way, exhibits explore the fragile ecology of the world cloud forests and deliver a gentle message about climate change and the threats facing these rare habitats. The combination of dramatic scale, immersive planting, cool relief from the heat and the sheer spectacle of the indoor waterfall has made the Cloud Forest one of the most popular attractions in Singapore, a favourite for families and a magnet for photographs. Reached easily within the wider gardens beside Marina Bay, and best enjoyed alongside its sister dome, it forms part of one of the most ambitious horticultural projects in the world. For visitors, the Cloud Forest offers a refreshing, awe-inspiring and subtly educational escape, a misty mountain world conjured beneath glass in the heart of the tropics. Inside the cooled glasshouse rises a towering green mountain wrapped in mist, fed by one of the tallest indoor waterfalls in the world. A series of walkways spirals up and around the structure, leading past orchids, ferns and pitcher plants drawn from tropical highlands, and the controlled chill comes as a sharp and welcome contrast to the heat outside.
