AC Milan Football Match

A home football match for AC Milan takes place at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, known to most as San Siro, a vast double-tiered concrete stadium on the western edge of the city that the club shares with its great cross-town rival Internazionale. The ground holds around seventy-five thousand spectators and is one of the largest stadiums in Italy. Opened in 1926 and named for the longtime AC Milan player Giuseppe Meazza, who joined Inter as well, the stadium has been progressively expanded over almost a century, most dramatically before the 1990 World Cup, when the now-famous distinctive cylindrical staircases and the heavy steel roof girders were added. AC Milan, founded in 1899 by English expatriates as the Milan Foot-Ball and Cricket Club, is one of the most decorated clubs in European football, with multiple league titles and seven Champions League victories. The team plays in red and black stripes, the famous rossoneri colours that have become synonymous with the club. Match days transform the surrounding district. Trams from the city centre run full of fans wrapped in scarves and flags, and the streets around the stadium fill with stalls selling food, scarves and souvenirs, with both Milan and visiting supporters segregated into their separate sections of the ground. The atmosphere inside is among the most charged in European football, with the Curva Sud, the home end behind one goal, packed with the most committed AC Milan supporters and a constant rolling soundtrack of chants, drums and choreographed flag displays. A visit on match day offers a glimpse into one of the most storied sporting cultures in Europe, and even on non-match days the stadium can be toured, with access to the changing rooms, the players tunnel and a small museum sharing the building combined heritage between the two clubs that have called it home. The future of the historic ground has been a matter of debate, with both clubs at times proposing to build a new shared stadium nearby and demolish the existing structure, though successive heritage objections have so far kept the old building standing. The lower bowl, dating to the original construction, is significantly steeper and closer to the pitch than later additions and is prized by fans for the atmosphere it delivers. The Derby della Madonnina, played between Milan and Inter twice a year, sells out the entire stadium and is considered one of the great fixtures of European club football.
