Assisi & Orvieto Day Trips from Florence
click to manage
Several Florence-based tour operators run day trips to the medieval Umbrian hill towns of Assisi and Orvieto, two of the most photographed and historically important small cities of central Italy. The combined excursion makes for a long but rewarding day on the road, taking in two utterly different but equally striking towns that would each merit a longer visit in their own right. The drive south from Florence runs through the rolling Tuscan and Umbrian countryside, with cypresses, vineyards and olive groves rolling past the window for around two hours, often with a stop for coffee or photographs en route. Many tours travel in air-conditioned coaches with multilingual guides, though smaller minibus and private-car options also exist. Assisi, the birthplace of Saint Francis, occupies a long ridge on the slopes of Mount Subasio, its narrow streets of pinkish stone climbing past medieval houses to the great double basilica at the western end of the town. The lower and upper basilicas, with their frescoes by Giotto, Cimabue and Simone Martini, are among the masterpieces of Italian medieval painting. Orvieto, perched on a flat-topped volcanic plug high above the surrounding plain, is reached by funicular from the railway station below. Its medieval cathedral, with a striped marble and mosaic facade, is one of the most ornate in Italy, and the Chapel of San Brizio inside holds a startling cycle of Last Judgement frescoes by Luca Signorelli. A typical itinerary allows a couple of hours in each town, with time for lunch in one or the other, often built around regional specialities such as Umbrian black truffles, hand-rolled pasta or the white wines of Orvieto. The full round trip from Florence usually fills around twelve hours, returning to the city in the early evening, and the format suits visitors who want a structured glimpse of central Italy beyond Tuscany without having to plan the logistics themselves or risk the long drives on unfamiliar roads. Many tours pair the trip with a visit to one of the surrounding wineries or olive-oil producers, adding a tasting element to the day. Smaller-group private tours, often led by a single guide travelling with a few clients in a comfortable car, offer a more flexible alternative to the standard coach-tour format. The basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi and the cathedral in Orvieto often require pre-booked tickets in high season, and tour operators usually take care of this in advance, sparing independent visitors the queues that can otherwise eat into a tight schedule.
