Built into the modern Casa Milan headquarters in the Portello district north-west of central Milan, the Mondo Milan museum is the official museum and trophy room of the AC Milan football club. Designed by the architect Fabio Novembre and opened in 2014, the building serves as both the corporate base of the club and a showcase of its history. The museum interactive route covers the more than one and a quarter centuries of the club existence, from its foundation by English expatriates in 1899 as the Milan Foot-Ball and Cricket Club through to the modern era. Multimedia displays trace the great managers, players and matches in the rossoneri history. The most striking part of the visit is the trophy room, the so-called Sala dei Trofei, where the club seven Champions League titles, multiple Italian championships, Coppa Italia trophies and other silverware are displayed in glass cases under dramatic lighting. Visitors can come within an arm length of the cups for the first time in the club history. Personal items belonging to legendary AC Milan players, including boots, jerseys and personal letters, are scattered through the museum, alongside touchscreen displays that play back famous goals and matches from the club archives. Sections are devoted to the long careers of figures such as Franco Baresi, Paolo Maldini, Marco van Basten and Kaka. The Casa Milan building also houses the club official store, an AC Milan-themed restaurant and the administrative offices, with the result that the museum is part of a working club headquarters rather than a standalone visitor attraction. Group bookings, school visits and themed tours can be arranged. Reached by the M5 metro line from central Milan, the museum is a worthwhile stop for fans of the club or for anyone interested in the wider history of Italian football, and combines well with a visit to the San Siro stadium on the other side of the city, where AC Milan plays its home matches. The Sala dei Trofei circular hall is designed so visitors descend a gently sloping ramp around the perimeter, with the cups arranged in the centre, taking in the European Cups, Intercontinental Cups, Italian league trophies and assorted minor silverware in a single sweep. Outside the museum, the courtyard of Casa Milan is laid with a piece of pitch turf and an outline of the club crest set into the paving, and on match days fans gather here for travel to the San Siro. The store sells signed shirts, vintage replicas of historic strips and a wide range of memorabilia, and the in-house restaurant Fonderia Milanese is themed around the club distinctive red-and-black colours.
