De Montel - Terme Milano

Opened to the public on 1 April 2025 in the restored Liberty-style buildings of the former De Montel stables in the San Siro district of Milan, De Montel Terme Milano is the largest urban thermal park in Europe, covering sixteen thousand square metres with ten geothermal pools fed from a hot spring nearly four hundred metres below ground. The site has an unexpected back story. The original stables were built in 1921 to designs by the architect Vietti Violi for the engineer and textile industrialist Giuseppe De Montel, a leading figure in the Milanese horse-racing world. The buildings, an unusually elegant complex of Liberty pavilions and courtyards, were used to house thoroughbred horses for racing at the nearby San Siro hippodrome. The stables were abandoned in the 1970s and fell into ruin over the decades that followed, although a thermal spring at a depth of three hundred and ninety-six metres beneath the site was first identified in 2007. A long planning and restoration process followed, with the project finally completed in 2025 at a total cost of around fifty million euros, financed by the Infrastrutture per la Crescita fund of the Azimut group and operated by Terme and Spa Italia. The complex includes ten pools, fed by spring water certified by the Italian Ministry of Health, with temperatures ranging from twenty-eight to thirty-eight degrees Celsius and varying chemical compositions for different therapeutic effects. Outdoor pools sit in landscaped gardens around the restored stables, while indoor pools and a saline grotto occupy the heart of the buildings. A spa with fifteen treatment rooms, a sauna world with Finnish, biosauna and steam options, salt rooms, an outdoor sun terrace and several themed eating areas complete the wellness offer. A capacity of seven hundred guests at any time makes the complex one of the largest of its kind in Europe, with timed admission tickets that include access to all the basic facilities for a typical three or four hour visit. The location, a few hundred metres from the San Siro stadium and the M5 metro line, is unusually accessible for an urban thermal park of this scale. The combination of historic Liberty architecture, certified thermal water and large-scale outdoor pools in the heart of a major city is unusual in Italy, and the early reception of the project suggests that the De Montel stables, after more than half a century of abandonment, have found a new long-term role as a wellness destination for Milan and its visitors.
