San Siro Stadium

Formally the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza but known to almost everyone as San Siro after the district of Milan in which it stands, this great cylindrical stadium is the largest football ground in Italy and the home of both AC Milan and Inter Milan, an unusual sharing arrangement that has lasted since 1947. The stadium currently seats around seventy-five thousand spectators across three steeply pitched tiers. The original ground on the site was built in 1925 to a much more modest design with a capacity of around fifty thousand. The stadium was given to the city of Milan by the AC Milan president Piero Pirelli in 1935 and renamed for Giuseppe Meazza, the great Inter Milan and Italy striker, in 1980 a few weeks after his death. Most Milanese still refer to the ground simply as San Siro. The current form of the stadium dates from a major reconstruction completed in 1990 for the FIFA World Cup. The architects Giancarlo Ragazzi and Enrico Hoffer added eleven external towers, four of which support a new fourth tier, and a distinctive red, white and dark cross-bracing pattern around the curtain walls. The result is one of the most architecturally striking football grounds in Europe. The stadium hosts derby matches between Milan and Inter, the Derby della Madonnina, regularly named among the most atmospheric club fixtures in world football. Italian league games, Champions League ties and Italy national team matches all take place at the ground, and major concerts by international artists are staged in the summer when the football season is in recess. A small museum at the ground, the Museo San Siro, displays trophies, shirts, programmes and historical photographs from the parallel histories of both Milan clubs across a century of football at the venue. Guided stadium tours run on non-match days and take visitors through the changing rooms, the players tunnel, the press room and a side of the pitch itself. The future of San Siro has been debated for many years, with both clubs at various times exploring the possibility of building a new shared stadium nearby or going their separate ways. As of the mid-2020s, the existing stadium continues in use, and a visit for a derby, a Champions League knockout tie or simply an end-of-season concert remains one of the most memorable sporting outings in northern Italy.
