QC Terme Milano

Opened in 2007 in a converted Art Nouveau building beside the surviving sixteenth-century Spanish walls of Porta Romana, the QC Termemilano is one of the principal urban wellness destinations in northern Italy and one of the more architecturally distinguished spa venues in the country. The two-thousand-five-hundred-square-metre complex offers more than thirty different sauna, steam, hydrotherapy and massage treatments across a series of richly decorated interior and outdoor spaces. The QC Terme group was founded in 1982 by the brothers Saverio and Andrea Quadrio Curzio with the opening of the first centre at Bormio in the Valtellina mountains. The group has expanded progressively over the following four decades to include twelve principal centres and five hotels across Italy and abroad, with venues in Bormio, Pre Saint Didier, Mont Blanc, Milan, Turin, Rome, San Pellegrino, the Dolomites, Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, New York and Lake Garda. The Milan centre was the first of the urban spa venues opened by the group and brought the spa concept from the original mountain settings into the heart of the densely built central districts of one of the larger Italian cities. The building, a former Art Nouveau private residence from the early twentieth century, was substantially restored and adapted to the spa function during the years preceding the 2007 opening. The interior is organised around a sequence of large light-filled saunas, steam rooms, salt rooms and hydrotherapy pools on the principal lower floors of the building, with the second and third floors dedicated to the various individual massage and treatment rooms. The decoration combines the original Art Nouveau interior elements with contemporary design elements, with extensive use of natural wood, polished stone and water features. The outdoor garden behind the spa is bounded along one side by the original Spanish walls of the sixteenth-century fortifications. The garden includes a large outdoor heated swimming pool, several outdoor saunas, a famous biosauna housed in a converted vintage Milan ATM tram and the spectacular Underwater Museum, an outdoor hydromassage pool with crystal glass walls that allow swimmers to look directly into a small excavated archaeological area showing the original foundations of the Spanish walls. The site is reached easily from the Crocetta and Porta Romana metro stops.
