Roma World

Opened on 13 June 2020 next to the larger Cinecitta World cinema-themed amusement park at Castel Romano on the southern outskirts of Rome, Roma World is an outdoor theme park dedicated to the everyday life of the ancient Roman Empire. The park covers around five hectares of woodland, meadow and Roman countryside and is conceived as an immersive village experience rather than as a conventional ride-based amusement park. The park entrance reproduces the great fortified gate of a Roman legionary camp, the Castrum, with high wooden walls and a great central archway leading through to the interior. Beyond the gateway, visitors enter a recreated Roman village with around twenty individual themed buildings including workshops, taverns, a small temple, a market square, a gladiator school and a Roman military camp with a series of historically accurate tents. The principal central feature of the park is the Gladiator Arena, a small open-air amphitheatre where visitors can attend scheduled gladiatorial combat displays performed by professional Italian stunt performers in historically accurate armour and equipment. Visitors can also participate themselves in introductory gladiator training classes led by the same professional instructors, with the use of wooden practice weapons and the various standard sword-fighting techniques of the late Republic and early Empire. A particular feature of the park is the surviving Ben Hur film set, the original full-scale Roman racing chariot arena built for the 2016 Hollywood remake of the famous Ben Hur film starring Jack Huston. The film set has been preserved on the park grounds and is the location for a daily live show, Roma on Fire, in which professional stunt drivers reproduce the famous chariot race scenes of the film. Visitors can also participate themselves in introductory chariot driving classes. The park includes a small petting farm with various animals typical of the Roman countryside including chickens, goats, sheep, donkeys and a number of working oxen used in the various agricultural demonstrations. A nightly archery school and a series of falconry displays add additional educational and entertainment options. The park also offers an unusual overnight stay option in the legionary camp tents, allowing visitors to experience an authentic if heavily romanticised version of Roman military life. The combination of immersive village setting, professional performance shows and hands-on participation activities makes Roma World a particularly popular family destination on the southern outskirts of the city.
