Greece in Miniature Museum

Opened on 19 October 2024 in a converted five-storey building at the corner of Favierou and Marni a short walk from the central Omonia square in Athens, the Greece in Miniature Museum is the first dedicated museum of architectural miniatures in Greece and one of the more innovative recent additions to the Athenian cultural calendar. The privately owned museum presents detailed one-to-fifty scale models of the principal monuments and landscapes of Greece spread across five themed exhibition floors. The museum was conceived as a way of presenting the wider cultural heritage of Greece to visitors who might have limited time in the country and could not easily travel to the various scattered archaeological sites in person. The principal exhibits cover the major monuments of Athens itself, the great archaeological sites of the Greek mainland including Delphi, Olympia, Epidaurus, Mycenae and Meteora, the principal islands of the Aegean and the Ionian seas, and several of the more distinctive natural landscapes including the volcanic caldera of Santorini. Each model is made to a standard scale of one to fifty using a combination of three-dimensional printing, traditional architectural modelling techniques and hand-painted finishing details. The level of detail in the models is exceptional, with individual figures, vegetation, surface textures and lighting effects reproducing the appearance of the actual sites at the moment of the day depicted. Several of the larger models include working lighting effects that simulate the appearance of the sites at sunrise, sunset and various weather conditions. The museum supplements the static models with a substantial programme of virtual reality and augmented reality experiences. Several stations on each floor provide visitors with virtual reality headsets through which they can experience the various sites in three dimensions, with environmental sound effects and panoramic views from positions impossible to reach in person. Augmented reality tablets allow visitors to overlay digital reconstructions onto the physical models. The five floors of the building are organised thematically rather than geographically. The first floor covers the principal monuments of Athens, the second floor covers the major Greek mainland archaeological sites, the third floor covers the Aegean and Ionian islands, the fourth floor covers the natural landscapes of the country and the upper fifth floor provides a panoramic terrace with views across the surrounding Athenian neighbourhoods. The full visit takes around ninety minutes at a comfortable pace, with the audio guide and virtual reality experiences included in the standard ticket.
