Selfie Museum Thessaloniki

Set in a converted commercial space on Mitropoleos Street in central Thessaloniki, the Selfie Museum Thessaloniki opened in 2021 as one of the first dedicated selfie photography venues in northern Greece. The museum consists of around thirty individual themed photo opportunity rooms designed specifically to provide visually striking backgrounds for mobile phone self-portrait photography. The dedicated selfie museum format originated in the United States in the late 2010s and spread rapidly across Europe and Asia during the years immediately preceding and following the global Covid pandemic. The format reflects the rapid shift in popular photographic culture toward the social media generation, with venues conceived from the outset as backdrops for photographic posting on Instagram and other principal social media platforms rather than as conventional cultural museums. The Thessaloniki branch follows the standard arrangement of the international franchise. Each of the around thirty individual themed rooms provides a fully constructed three-dimensional photographic environment, with carefully designed lighting, professional photographic backdrops, themed props and small interactive elements that allow visitors to pose in a particular scenario for the photographic record. The themed environments range from classical fantasy through contemporary pop culture, from cinematic and gaming references to abstract decorative designs. The principal individual rooms include a giant disco ball room covered entirely in reflective mirror tiles, a butterfly room with thousands of suspended butterfly silhouettes, a vintage bath tub filled with synthetic pink foam, a swing room with a ceiling-suspended swing against a cloud background, a giant slice of pizza, an upside-down living room with the furniture mounted on the ceiling and a rainbow corridor with progressively coloured strip lighting. The venue is self-guided and typically takes between forty-five minutes and ninety minutes depending on the number of rooms visited and the amount of time spent posing in each environment. The standard ticket includes unlimited access to all the rooms during a single visit and unlimited use of personal mobile phones and cameras for photography. The central Mitropoleos location places the venue on one of the principal commercial streets of central Thessaloniki, within easy walking distance of most of the other major central attractions of the city.
