Set on the upper floors of the Baiyoke Tower II skyscraper in the Pratunam district of central Bangkok, the Baiyoke Sky Hotel is the highest hotel in Thailand and one of the highest large hotels anywhere in South-East Asia. The hotel occupies floors twenty-two through to seventy-four of the eighty-eight-floor tower, providing six hundred and seventy-three guest rooms across more than fifty individual room floors. The hotel opened in 1998 as the principal occupant of the new Baiyoke II tower. The Baiyoke II tower itself was designed by the Thai architect Plan Architect under the personal commission of the Thai tycoon Praneed Liamlertkij, with construction running between 1990 and 1997. The completed building stood three hundred and four metres tall to the structural roof and three hundred and twenty-eight metres tall to the top of the lightning rod, making it the tallest building in Thailand at the time of completion and the tallest hotel building anywhere in the world from 1997 through to 2003. The combination of the great height and the central Pratunam location made the tower an immediate principal landmark of the Bangkok skyline. The lower public floors of the hotel include the principal lobby on the eighteenth floor, the convention and banquet facilities between the eighteenth and twenty-first floors and a series of restaurants and bars spread across various levels. The famous Bangkok Sky Buffet on the seventy-sixth, seventy-seventh and seventy-eighth floors is the highest large hotel buffet anywhere in Thailand and provides a panoramic view of the surrounding city while serving a substantial international and Thai cuisine programme. The guest rooms occupy the floors between the twenty-second and the seventy-fourth, with the room categories progressively upgrading at the higher levels. The standard rooms on the lower floors include the conventional twin and double options, while the executive rooms on the higher floors add club lounge access and complimentary breakfast at the central Sky Lounge. The Royal Pavilion suites on the upper floors include separate sitting rooms and the famous panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows providing wide views of the surrounding city. The principal upper-floor public amenity is the famous Skywalk Observation Deck on the seventy-seventh floor, with the rotating outdoor seventh-fourth-floor viewing platform providing the highest accessible public viewing point anywhere in Bangkok. The observation deck is open to non-residents on payment of the standard observation fee, while hotel guests receive complimentary access throughout their stay. The combination of the high observation deck, the rooftop revolving viewpoint and the high-altitude buffet restaurants makes the hotel one of the principal vertical tourist attractions of central Bangkok.
