Set in the basement-level entertainment zone of the A-Square complex on Soi Sukhumvit 26 in the central Khlong Toei district of Bangkok, Flow House is the principal indoor wave-pool surfing venue in central Thailand and provides a continuous year-round surfing experience using the standard FlowRider stationary wave technology. The venue opened in 2007 as the first FlowRider installation in South-East Asia and has been continuously operated since by the Bangkok-based hospitality company Flow House Asia. The FlowRider technology was developed during the early 1990s by the American wave technology specialist Wave Loch International as an alternative to the conventional ocean surfing experience for visitors based far from any natural coastline. The system uses a single high-volume water jet pumped over a continuous fibreglass slope at around three thousand gallons per minute, producing a continuous standing wave of approximately one and a half metres in height that simulates the principal characteristics of a small breaking ocean wave. The venue contains two separate FlowRider installations of different sizes. The primary single FlowRider on the eastern side of the venue is the standard installation suitable for novice and intermediate riders, with the wave configured to a smaller and gentler shape that allows beginners to learn the basic balance and movement techniques. The larger Double FlowBarrel on the western side provides a substantially more challenging tube-like wave with a curling lip that approximates the experience of more advanced ocean surfing. The standard rental session includes one hour of continuous use of the venue, with riders typically taking around five to ten individual two-minute riding sessions during the hour interspersed with rest periods between turns. The standard rentals include the use of the basic flowboard equipment, with personal wetsuits available for hire for the more advanced sessions. Group lessons under the supervision of the resident instructors are available for novice riders, with private one-on-one tuition also available on advance booking. The supplementary facilities include a substantial poolside bar and restaurant providing the standard Thai and international cuisine, a small retail shop selling FlowRider-themed surf merchandise and the principal entry-level surfing equipment, and a small spectator viewing area for non-participating friends and family. The venue is particularly popular for birthday celebrations, corporate team-building events and the various group entertainment bookings of the central Bangkok corporate hospitality market.
