ICONSIAM

Opened on 9 November 2018 on the western Thonburi bank of the Chao Phraya River in the Khlong San district of Bangkok, ICONSIAM is the largest luxury shopping complex in Thailand and one of the principal commercial landmarks of the modern Thai capital. The complex covers around five hundred and twenty-five thousand square metres of gross floor area across seven retail levels and was the largest single private property development in Thai history at the time of completion. The development was carried out by a joint venture between Siam Piwat, Magnolia Quality Development Corporation and Charoen Pokphand Group with a total investment of around fifty-four billion Thai baht. The construction took around six years from the initial groundbreaking in 2012 through to the opening of the principal retail areas in late 2018. The principal architectural design was provided by the international consultancy Hassell Studio working with the Thai firm Plan Architect. The principal retail anchor of the complex is the Siam Takashimaya Japanese department store, the first international branch of the famous Tokyo-based luxury department store chain in South-East Asia. The other principal anchors include the SOOKSIAM Thai cultural and craft mall covering twelve thousand square metres on the second floor, the True Icon Hall conference and exhibition centre, the ICONLUXE luxury fashion mall covering around forty international top-tier fashion brands and the IMAX cinema complex on the upper levels. The principal individual architectural highlight of the complex is the famous ICONSIAM Multimedia Water Feature on the riverside esplanade at the eastern edge of the building. The water feature consists of around four hundred individual fountain jets coordinated with a substantial LED lighting display and a programmed musical soundtrack, with a series of major themed shows performed across the river-facing facade of the building every evening between dusk and the closing of the principal retail floors at around twenty-two hundred. The supplementary facilities include around five hundred individual retail outlets covering all the principal Thai and international fashion brands, around one hundred restaurants and cafes spread across the principal upper floors, the substantial SOOKSIAM Thai cultural floor reproducing the appearance of a traditional Thai floating market with around three thousand individual local Thai vendors, and the principal IMAX cinema of the western Bangkok district. The connection to the central Bangkok area is provided by the dedicated MRT subway extension Charoen Nakhon station opened in 2019 and by a free shuttle boat service running every fifteen minutes from the central Saphan Taksin pier.
