Madame Tussauds Bangkok

Opened on 4 December 2010 on the sixth floor of the Siam Discovery shopping centre at the corner of Rama I and Phaya Thai Roads in central Bangkok, Madame Tussauds Bangkok is the principal South-East Asian branch of the famous London-based international wax museum chain. The Bangkok branch contains approximately ninety individual wax figures across a continuous walk-through exhibition route of around two thousand square metres. The Madame Tussauds franchise was originally founded in London in 1835 by the French wax sculptor Marie Tussaud, who had developed her wax-modelling skills as a young apprentice in pre-revolutionary Paris and had subsequently established her permanent London exhibition in the Baker Street area. The franchise has been progressively extended over the past three decades to around twenty-five international branches across major cities of Europe, North America, South America, Asia, Australia and the Middle East. The Bangkok branch follows the standard contemporary international Madame Tussauds layout, with a continuous walk-through exhibition route organised across approximately twelve themed zones. The principal zones cover Thai royalty including the famous wax figures of King Bhumibol and Queen Sirikit, Thai political and cultural figures, international sporting personalities, classical Hollywood film stars, contemporary international music celebrities, contemporary international actors and a separate dedicated zone covering the major figures of the Thai entertainment industry. The principal individual highlight of the Bangkok branch is the substantial dedicated Thai royal and cultural zone, which provides the most comprehensive wax-figure presentation of modern Thai cultural history available anywhere in the country. The wax figures of the various recent Thai kings, queens and other royal family members are particularly heavily photographed by domestic Thai visitors, with several of the figures including the famous likeness of King Bhumibol regarded as among the most accurate Madame Tussauds representations of any modern world leaders. The interactive features distributed across the various zones include the standard posed photographic opportunities with each of the principal wax figures, several themed photographic backdrops covering the famous London Buckingham Palace facade, the famous Hollywood Boulevard sidewalk and the various Thai cultural reference settings, and a small interactive sports zone with several themed sports photographic backdrops. The standard self-guided visit takes around ninety minutes to two hours at a moderate pace through all the various zones, with the central Siam Square location providing easy walking access from most of the principal central Bangkok hotels and shopping districts.
