Mahanakhon Skywalk

Opened on 16 November 2018 on the seventy-fourth, seventy-fifth and seventy-eighth floors of the King Power Mahanakhon skyscraper on Narathiwas Road in the central Silom district of Bangkok, the Mahanakhon Skywalk is the highest publicly accessible observation deck in Thailand and one of the most internationally recognised individual observation experiences anywhere in central Bangkok. The principal seventy-eighth-floor outdoor deck at three hundred and fourteen metres above ground level provides a full three-hundred-and-sixty-degree panoramic view of the wider central Bangkok metropolitan area. The host King Power Mahanakhon building, formerly known as the MahaNakhon, was designed by the German architect Ole Scheeren in collaboration with the Thai firm Plan Architect and was completed in August 2016. The seventy-seven-floor skyscraper was the tallest building in Thailand from completion through to the completion of the Magnolias Waterfront Residences in 2018 and remains one of the most distinctive single buildings of the modern Thai capital. The famous pixelated facade with the irregular protruding glass cubes is one of the most internationally recognised features of any contemporary Thai skyscraper. The principal indoor observation level on the seventy-fourth floor opened in November 2018 and provides the principal weather-protected viewing experience for visitors to the building. The substantial floor-to-ceiling windows on all four sides of the building provide uninterrupted panoramic views across the surrounding city, with interpretive panels along the various viewing positions covering the principal landmark buildings visible from each direction. A series of interactive multimedia displays covers the history and architectural development of the wider modern Bangkok skyline. The principal seventy-eighth-floor outdoor SkyDeck at the very top of the building provides one of the highest accessible outdoor viewing positions anywhere in Thailand. The deck features the famous Glass Tray, a transparent acrylic panel set directly into the floor of the deck that provides an apparently unsupported view straight down the entire three-hundred-and-fourteen-metre external face of the building to the small streets below. The Glass Tray is one of the most heavily photographed individual features of any observation deck anywhere in the country. The supplementary facilities include a substantial bar and restaurant on the seventy-fourth floor providing the standard high-altitude beverages and small plates, a small souvenir shop selling Mahanakhon-themed merchandise and the various standard timed-entry tickets available either at the central ground-floor ticket desk or through the various online reservation platforms. The standard visit takes around an hour at a comfortable pace through the various viewing levels, with the BTS Skytrain Chong Nonsi station immediately below the building providing direct connection to the wider central Bangkok rail network.
