Set on Rua de Faria Guimaraes in the central Cedofeita parish of Porto, the 3D Fun Art Museum Porto is the northern Portuguese branch of the wider 3D Fun Art Museum franchise founded in Lisbon in around 2018 by the entrepreneur Lara Hein. The Porto branch opened in around 2022 as the second principal location of the wider Portuguese franchise and provides the principal interactive optical illusion attraction in the northern Portuguese region. The international interactive optical illusion museum format developed during the early and mid 2010s in Japan and South Korea as a deliberate alternative to the conventional static art gallery model. The format combines the principal three-dimensional painted scenarios of the older trompe l oeil tradition with the contemporary social media photography market, providing carefully positioned scenes designed for photographic recording rather than conventional aesthetic contemplation. The Porto branch follows the standard arrangement of the wider franchise, with around thirty individual three-dimensional painted scenarios spread across a continuous walk-through exhibition route. Each individual scene is designed to provide a different specific visual illusion when photographed from the designated viewing position, with the resulting photographs typically showing the visitor in a dramatic or impossible spatial relationship with the surrounding painted backdrop. The principal individual installations include the classic shark and crocodile underwater scenes, several themed dinosaur tableaux including a substantial reconstruction of the famous Jurassic Park kitchen scene, a giant chess board where visitors appear as the chess pieces, an upside-down dining room with the furniture mounted on the ceiling, a wide selection of dramatic transport-themed installations including a hot-air balloon scene and a Venetian gondola, and around ten supplementary scenes covering various Hollywood film references and contemporary popular culture themes. The visit is self-guided and typically takes around forty-five minutes to ninety minutes depending on the depth of engagement with each individual installation. The standard ticket allows unlimited time within the exhibition area during a single visit, with personal mobile phone photography unrestricted throughout the exhibition. Group bookings for birthday parties, school visits and corporate team-building events are available through the central booking desk, with the various supplementary packages including catering options, photographic services and the standard celebration party formats.
