A substantial tree-lined principal boulevard running through the central business and shopping district of Lisbon, the Avenida da Liberdade extends for approximately one and a half kilometres between the Praca dos Restauradores at the southern end and the great Marques de Pombal traffic circle at the northern end. The avenue has been the principal central commercial axis of the Portuguese capital continuously since its original completion in 1886 and remains one of the most prestigious individual commercial addresses in the wider city. The avenue was originally laid out between 1879 and 1886 as part of the wider modernisation of central Lisbon under the directing engineer Ressano Garcia. The original design was substantially modelled on the contemporary great boulevards of Paris that had been laid out by Baron Haussmann during the 1850s and 1860s. The principal dimensions of around ninety metres wide by one and a half kilometres long made the new avenue one of the largest single urban boulevards anywhere in the Iberian peninsula at the time of completion. The principal architectural development along the avenue took place primarily during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The various surviving original townhouses, hotels and commercial buildings along the principal western and eastern sides of the boulevard provide one of the principal surviving collections of late nineteenth-century Portuguese commercial architecture anywhere in central Lisbon. The principal individual surviving examples include the famous Hotel Tivoli Avenida Liberdade, the former Sociedade de Geografia palace and the various hotel townhouses around the central Saldanha and Marques de Pombal sections. The modern commercial profile of the avenue has progressively shifted toward the principal international luxury fashion market during the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. The various current major retail tenants along the principal central sections include the standard major international luxury brands including Louis Vuitton, Prada, Gucci, Hermes, Burberry and Cartier, alongside the various major Portuguese luxury retailers and several principal international hotel groups including the Four Seasons, the Tivoli and the Olissippo brands. The avenue is the principal annual venue for the major Portuguese national parade events, including the famous Lisbon Marathon each March, the Santo Antonio popular saints procession each June and the various other principal Lisbon municipal celebrations throughout the year. The continuous central pedestrian promenade running between the principal traffic lanes provides one of the principal continuous walking routes through the historic central business district of the wider Portuguese capital.
