Banksy Museum Lisbon

Originally opening as a temporary World of Banksy exhibition during the summer of 2022 and subsequently established at a permanent location on Rua Viriato in the central Sao Sebastiao da Pedreira district of Lisbon, the Museu Banksy is one of the principal contemporary art museums of the Portuguese capital. The museum is dedicated to the work of the anonymous British street artist Banksy and currently displays around one hundred individual reproductions of the various principal works of the artist produced between 2000 and 2023. The original temporary exhibition was developed by a group of independent international art exhibition specialists in collaboration with the wider Banksy artistic community. The original 2022 summer programme attracted over twenty-two thousand visitors during the initial six-month opening period and substantially exceeded the original commercial expectations of the development team. The decision to convert the temporary exhibition into a permanent museum facility was taken in late 2022. The permanent collection consists of around one hundred individual full-scale reproductions of the various principal Banksy works produced internationally during the past two and a half decades. The various individual works are arranged geographically across a series of themed rooms covering the principal locations of the wider Banksy creative output, with separate dedicated rooms covering the United Kingdom, France, the United States, Palestine and Israel, and most recently a substantial new room dedicated to the various works produced during the artists 2022 visit to Ukraine. The principal individual highlights of the permanent collection include the famous Girl with the Balloon mural originally produced in London in around 2002, the Flower Thrower originally produced in Jerusalem in 2003, the Migrant Child originally produced in Venice in around 2019, several principal works from the famous 2015 Dismaland exhibition in southern England, and the eleven new Ukrainian works including The Gymnast, The Judo Competition and The Ballet Dancer all completed during the artists 2022 visit to the besieged Ukrainian cities. The wider exhibition combines the principal physical reproductions with a substantial supplementary multimedia component including continuous video installations, projection mapping displays and the various contemporary digital art technologies that have been developed during the past decade. The standard visit typically takes around ninety minutes to two hours depending on the depth of engagement with each individual installation. The museum is open Monday to Friday from thirteen hundred to twenty hundred and Saturday and Sunday from eleven hundred to twenty hundred.
