A substantial sandy beach extending for approximately one and a half kilometres along the central Atlantic coast immediately west of the small coastal town of Carcavelos, around fifteen kilometres west of central Lisbon, Carcavelos Beach is one of the principal continuing summer destinations of the wider central Portuguese capital. The beach lies along the principal western Tagus estuary coast and is the largest individual sandy beach within the immediate commuter belt of central Lisbon. The principal characteristics of the beach include a substantial continuous golden sand surface approximately ninety metres wide at the maximum tidal range. The principal swimming and recreation zone extends along approximately one kilometre of the central section of the beach. The various supplementary infrastructure along the beachfront includes around fifteen individual beach bar and restaurant operations, several supplementary public showers and changing facilities, and a substantial network of pedestrian and cycling paths along the principal beachfront promenade. The beach has been one of the principal commuter weekend destinations of central Lisbon continuously since the original completion of the Cascais railway line in around 1889. The original railway line connected central Lisbon to the western Cascais coast and substantially increased the accessibility of the principal western coastal beaches to the wider central Lisbon urban population. The Carcavelos station on the central section of the line provides direct beach access within around twenty-five minutes of central Lisbon by the standard suburban rail service. The various surfing conditions along the beach are generally suitable for novice and intermediate level surfers throughout most of the year. The principal central beach break consists of various consistent shallow sandbar breaks with average wave heights of around one to one and a half metres during the principal autumn and winter swell seasons. The various surf schools along the principal beachfront provide standard lessons and equipment rental year-round, with the principal teaching activity concentrated along the central section of the beach during the spring and summer months. The wider summer programme along the beach includes regular weekly beach volleyball tournaments, the annual Carcavelos Surf Open competition each September, various small evening music and food events along the principal beachfront promenade during the principal summer high season, and the famous Festa de Sao Pedro each June that combines the standard popular saints celebrations with substantial beach picnics, fireworks and the various traditional Portuguese midsummer culinary specialities. The beach is reached most easily by the standard Cascais line suburban train from Lisbon Cais do Sodre central station.
