Set on the small Largo Santo Antonio da Se square immediately adjacent to the historic Lisbon Cathedral in the central Alfama district of Lisbon, Fado and Fado is one of the principal continuing fado dinner show restaurants of the wider historic central district of the Portuguese capital. The restaurant operates a continuous evening fado dinner show programme seven days per week throughout the year and is one of the principal continuing tourist-focused fado dining experiences of the central Alfama district. The restaurant operates as a traditional Portuguese fado dinner house, combining a substantial three-course Portuguese dinner with a continuous live fado music programme spread across the duration of the evening dining service. The standard fado dinner programme runs continuously from twenty hundred until around midnight each evening, with around four or five individual fado sets spread across the four-hour service period. Each fado set typically lasts around twenty minutes and is performed by the principal house fado singer accompanied by the standard two-musician Portuguese guitar and classical guitar ensemble. The principal dining room consists of a single substantial vaulted basement space with seating capacity for approximately one hundred dining guests across the various individual tables. The basement vaulted ceiling and traditional Portuguese stone walls provide the principal characteristic intimate physical environment of the traditional Portuguese fado dining house, with the various traditional decorative elements including the standard wrought-iron candle sconces, traditional ceramic tile panels and the various contemporary professional photographs of the principal historical Portuguese fado performers. The standard fado dinner menu consists of three courses covering the principal regional Portuguese culinary traditions. The standard opening courses typically include the principal traditional Portuguese cured pork, cheese and olive cold platters alongside the traditional sopa caldo verde green soup. The principal main course options typically include the traditional bacalhau cod preparations, various regional Portuguese meat preparations including the traditional cataplana seafood stew and the substantial Alentejo regional dry-cured pork specialities. The principal evening fado performers rotate across a substantial pool of around fifteen to twenty individual professional Lisbon fado performers, providing a varied selection of the wider continuing professional Lisbon fado tradition across the principal weekly evening programme. The various individual performers are drawn from across the entire range of the wider continuing professional Lisbon fado community, with the principal selection criteria emphasising the quality and authenticity of the individual fado interpretation rather than the principal commercial recognition of the various individual performers.
