Ideal Clube de Fado opened its current premises on 22 July 2022 in a converted ground floor space on Rua do Ateneu Comercial in the Baixa of Porto. The project was founded by fadista Ana Carvalho in 2019 as a daily concert series at the Galeria de Paris restaurant and bar, with the move to the Ateneu Comercial space marking its conversion from a programming series into a dedicated venue with its own stage and its own bar. The concert format is fado tradicional in its strictest form, with two fadistas, a Portuguese guitar and a viola de fado, and a deliberate avoidance of the tourist friendly marchas and folclore that creep into many Porto fado venues. Concerts run daily, with two early evening sets at 18:00 and 19:30 dedicated to standard programming and additional 21:00 shows on Fridays and Saturdays themed around individual historical fado figures such as Beatriz da Conceicao, Carlos Ramos or Hermina Silva. The room itself seats roughly 40 around small bistro tables and the acoustic balance keeps the singers unamplified throughout the show. The wider Ideal project also runs a school of fado out of the same address, with classes in fado singing, Portuguese guitar and viola de fado available to local students through the working week, and a regular tertulia programme of poetry readings that draws working fadistas and poets together for after-show discussion sessions. The venue functions as a working artist collective rather than a commercial concert promoter, with the singers and musicians collectively owning the programming and rotating across the bookings. Tickets are typically 22 to 28 euros depending on day and slot. The Ateneu Comercial do Porto, the wider building from which the street takes its name, is a nineteenth century commercial and cultural club founded in 1869 that still operates as a private members association on the upper floors of the same block, and the Ideal venue occupies a converted ground floor space facing onto the narrow street below. The Rua do Ateneu Comercial connects the lower Aliados area to the Praca dos Poveiros at the eastern edge of the Baixa, with the Sao Bento railway station three minutes walk to the south and the Bolhao Metro station four minutes east. The wider Ideal project also runs an annual Encontros no Ideal series of public conversations between working fadistas, poets and historians on the broader cultural significance of the fado tradition, with curatorship by the fadista Pedro Ferreira and direction by Maria Dias.
