The Cat Museum Budapest is an interactive art museum and cat sanctuary dedicated to celebrating the cat in art, culture and biology, occupying a building at Vadasz utca 26 in the central District V of the Hungarian capital. The museum combines a gallery of cat-themed art with a porcelain collection, interactive displays, film screenings and - its principal draw - a sanctuary of resident cats that visitors can meet, observe and pet in a controlled and comfortable environment. The museum is laid out across two galleried levels. The lower level follows the theme of "Cats in the World" and presents a collection of cat-themed art, including reinterpretations of famous paintings in which the human subjects have been replaced by cats, alongside antique and contemporary feline-themed artworks, several of which from the gallery are available for purchase. An Egyptian-themed photo wall, with a selfie stand and props, allows visitors to photograph themselves in the company of the ancient Egyptian reverence for cats, and a children's corner provides colouring and drawing activities for younger visitors. The upper level opens into the Jungle Room, which holds the museum's porcelain collection of cat figurines from the celebrated Hungarian manufacturers Zsolnay, Herend and Hollohaza alongside international pieces, and presents interesting interpretive information on the biology of cats and the characteristics of the various breeds. A film-screening area, a tablet-based quiz game and a UV-lit forest installation - in which a giant Cheshire Cat looks down from the wall with glowing eyes - complete the upper galleries. A relaxation nook at the rear, with a soothing forest soundtrack, provides a space for visitors to unwind in the company of the resident cats. The museum requires advance reservation, has a minimum visitor age of eight years, and includes a complimentary warm drink with the standard hour-and-a-half admission ticket. Visitors who successfully complete the quiz game are rewarded with a small souvenir, and a gift shop sells designer cat jewellery, clothing, accessories and homeware. The museum is open daily from 11:00 to 18:30, and also hosts children's birthday parties, creative workshops and private VIP visits by arrangement.
