The Ceausescu Mansion (Palatul Primaverii, the Spring Palace) is the former private residence of the Romanian communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu and his wife Elena, now opened as a house museum, at Bulevardul Primaverii 50 in the affluent northern Primaverii district of Bucharest. The mansion offers an extraordinary and revealing insight into the extravagant private life of the dictatorial couple who ruled Romania for a quarter of a century, in stark contrast to the poverty and rationing endured by the Romanian people during their rule. The Ceausescus moved into the villa in 1965, the year Nicolae Ceausescu came to power, and lived there until they fled the popular uprising of December 1989, after which they were captured and executed. Across those decades the modest original villa was progressively enlarged and lavishly redecorated into a palatial residence of some eighty rooms across three floors, fitted out with an opulence that was kept entirely hidden from the Romanian public during the regime. The house remained closed and largely untouched for many years after the revolution, before being opened to the public as a museum in 2016. The interior is a remarkable time capsule of 1970s and 1980s communist-elite luxury. The rooms are decorated with gold-leaf detailing, intricate mosaics, hand-woven silk wall coverings, Murano-glass chandeliers, fine furniture and a vast collection of art and gifts received from foreign heads of state. The house includes the private apartments of Nicolae and Elena and their three children, a winter garden, a private cinema, a spa with a mosaic-lined swimming pool and a sauna, and extensive gardens with a peacock aviary. The bathrooms, fitted with gold-plated fixtures, are among the most-discussed features of the tour. The museum presents the rooms as they were, with the original furnishings and decorations, allowing visitors to see directly the gulf between the private opulence of the ruling family and the austerity imposed on the population. The mansion is visited by guided or audio-guided tour, with advance booking recommended, and is open Tuesday to Sunday. It has become one of the most popular and most thought-provoking visitor attractions in Bucharest, particularly for those interested in the recent history of Romania under communism.
