Museum of Senses Bucharest

The Museum of Senses (Muzeul Simturilor) is an interactive science-and-illusion attraction in Bucharest, occupying a space on the first floor of the large AFI Cotroceni shopping centre at Bulevardul General Vasile Milea 4 in the west of the city. The museum belongs to the popular genre of interactive illusion museums that have spread across European cities, and presents a sequence of hands-on exhibits designed to trick and challenge the visitor's senses and to demonstrate, in an entertaining way, how easily the human brain can be deceived. The museum is laid out across around eleven thematic rooms holding more than forty interactive, science-based exhibits, all designed to be touched, explored and experienced firsthand rather than observed from behind a barrier. The journey is built around the way that visual and other sensory perception can override the other senses and the rational mind, and each installation provides a memorable physical demonstration of a particular perceptual phenomenon, accompanied by an explanation of the science behind it. The signature attractions include a vortex tunnel - a cylindrical corridor whose outer wall rotates around a stationary central walkway, producing an overwhelming sensation of losing one's balance as the visual system fights the inner ear; the Ames room, a distorted chamber that makes people appear to grow and shrink as they move across it; an inclined room in which water appears to flow uphill and balance is confounded; an infinity mirror disco room; a bed of nails; an upside-down room; and a large mirror maze. A 2D cafe room, painted to look like a flat cartoon drawing, is among the most photographed. The museum is designed as a fun and educational experience for the whole family, encouraging visitors to take photographs and videos throughout, and a visit typically takes between sixty and ninety minutes. The shopping-centre location makes it easily accessible and a popular destination for families, school groups and young visitors, and it is fully wheelchair accessible. It is reached by bus or by car to the AFI Cotroceni mall, and tickets are sold at the entrance and online through the major aggregators.
