House of Illusions Ljubljana

The House of Illusions (Hisa iluzij) is an interactive optical-illusion museum in the heart of the old town of Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, occupying a building on the central Kongresni trg (Congress Square) at number 13. The museum belongs to a popular international chain of illusion museums and offers a fun and educational walk-through experience built around around seventy exhibits that test and confound the visitor's perception, making it one of the most popular indoor family attractions in the Slovenian capital. The museum is organised around a sequence of large walk-in illusion rooms interspersed with a great many smaller installations. The smaller exhibits, placed throughout the museum, include classic optical illusions such as the Mirror of Truth, Rubin's Vase, the hollow-face illusion of Albert Einstein, and a series of holograms and changing photographs that appear and dissolve before the visitor's eyes. Each is designed to demonstrate, in an entertaining and hands-on way, the gap between what the eyes report and what is actually there. The principal attractions are the large room-scale illusions. The Anti-gravity Room is built so that everything appears to defy the laws of gravity; the Rotated Room turns the visitor's sense of reality through ninety degrees; the Infinity Disco Room uses mirrors to stretch fun and dance into infinity; the Ames Room makes people appear to grow and shrink as they move across it; and the Vortex Tunnel - a rotating cylindrical passage - produces a powerful sensation of spinning and a fight for balance as the visitor crosses the stationary bridge through its centre. A playroom of logical games and puzzles completes the experience. The museum is designed for visitors of all ages and encourages photography throughout, with several installations - including a kaleidoscope photo point - set up specifically as photogenic backdrops, making it one of the most "Instagrammable" venues in Ljubljana. The museum is open every day from 09:00 to 21:00, with last entry one hour before closing, and a typical visit takes between one and two hours. The central Congress Square location places it in the heart of the old town, an easy addition to a walk through the historic centre and up to Ljubljana Castle.
