Ljubljana Castle

Ljubljana Castle (Ljubljanski grad) is a medieval fortress that crowns the steep Castle Hill rising above the old town of Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, and is the principal landmark and most-visited attraction of the city. The castle dominates the skyline from its commanding hilltop position, offering panoramic views across the rooftops of the old town, the Ljubljanica river and the surrounding countryside towards the Julian Alps, and is reached by a funicular railway, by walking paths or by a tourist road. A fortification has stood on the hill since prehistoric and Roman times, exploiting the strategic position above the river crossing and the route through the Ljubljana Gap between the Alps and the Mediterranean. The first medieval castle is documented in the twelfth century, when the hill was the seat of the dukes of Carinthia and Carniola, and the castle became the residence of the regional lords. Most of the present structure dates from a comprehensive rebuilding in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, when the castle was strengthened against the threat of Ottoman raids into the region, with the addition of the surrounding walls, towers and the chapel. The castle declined in importance from the seventeenth century and over the following centuries served a succession of less glamorous functions - as a military garrison, an arsenal, a hospital and, for much of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, as the city prison. The castle fell into disrepair, but from the 1960s the city of Ljubljana undertook a long and thorough restoration that recovered the castle and adapted it as a cultural and visitor centre, a project that continued over several decades into the twenty-first century. The castle today is a lively cultural and visitor complex. It holds a museum of Slovenian history, the Gothic chapel of Saint George with its heraldic decoration, a puppet museum, exhibition galleries, restaurants and cafes, and the Outlook Tower, which can be climbed for the finest panorama over the city. The castle hosts a busy programme of concerts, theatre, weddings and open-air cinema, particularly in summer. It is reached most easily by the funicular railway that climbs from the old-town market square, and is open daily throughout the year.
