The Jacaranda, known historically as the Jacaranda Club and affectionately as "The Jac", is a celebrated music venue, bar, and record store at 21-23 Slater Street in Liverpool's Ropewalks. It was opened in September 1958 by Allan Williams, the Beatles' first manager, in a former watch-repair shop, and is closely tied to the rise of the Merseybeat scene. In its early years it offered one of the city's first espresso machines and live music, providing a regular stage for the young Beatles and other local acts such as Gerry and the Pacemakers and Rory Storm and the Hurricanes; it was also where the band auditioned drummers and where Williams helped arrange their first Hamburg trip. The building remains a working part of Liverpool's music history more than sixty years on. Reopened and refurbished in 2014 and now home to Jacaranda Records, the venue is split across three floors: a ground-floor bar, an intimate 300-capacity basement that hosts nightly live gigs and a famous Sunday open mic, and an upstairs record store and cafe with vinyl listening booths and a rare direct-to-vinyl recording machine.
