Band On The Wall

Band on the Wall is a celebrated live-music venue on Swan Street, on the edge of Manchester's Northern Quarter and Ancoats. The building began life as a pub, the George and Dragon, with the first licence on the site recorded in 1803, and it sits close to the former Smithfield Markets in what was a bustling, music-rich part of the industrial city. Its distinctive name dates from the 1930s, when landlord Ernie Tyson installed a small stage high on the far wall so that a resident band could play above the crowded room. Officially adopting the name in 1975, the venue became a jazz club and then, as punk arrived, a stage for bands such as the Buzzcocks and The Fall, while continuing to champion jazz, reggae, and world music. Run by the charity Inner City Music, Band on the Wall closed for a major Arts Council and Heritage Lottery-funded restoration in the late 2000s and reopened, with a further expansion completed in 2022 that added capacity and education spaces. Today it is regarded as one of the UK's most respected mid-sized music venues, presenting an eclectic, international programme.
