Actors Church (St Paul's Covent Garden)

St Paul's, Covent Garden, widely known as the Actors' Church, is a Church of England parish church on the western side of the Covent Garden piazza in central London, with its entrance on Bedford Street. Designed by the pioneering architect Inigo Jones and completed in the 1630s as part of his planned square for the Earl of Bedford, it is celebrated as an early and influential example of classical architecture in England. The church earns its nickname from a long and close association with the theatre and entertainment community of the surrounding West End. Its interior is lined with memorials to actors, performers, and others connected with the stage, and it has hosted memorial services for many well-known figures from British theatre, film, and music. The portico facing the piazza is famous as the setting of the opening scene of George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion, and the surrounding square is a long-standing site for street performance. An active place of worship and a popular visitor attraction, St Paul's also stages concerts and theatrical performances, sitting at the heart of one of London's busiest cultural districts.
