Blush And Barrel

Housed in the Old County Hall on Bayley Lane, overlooking Coventry's Cathedral Quarter, Blush and Barrel is a cocktail bar and restaurant set in one of the city centre's most historic buildings. The location pairs a contemporary, drink-led bar with surroundings steeped in local history, just a short walk from the cathedral ruins and the medieval core of the city. The Old County Hall dates back to 1783 and once formed part of a courthouse, jail, and gallows complex, a past that has left the building with a reputation for ghost stories as well as architecture. In more recent years parts of the structure have been given over to student flats, while the bar space itself previously traded as The Establishment, which opened in 2017, and then as a Slug and Lettuce. Blush and Barrel opened in May 2026, taking over after the Slug and Lettuce closed during a restructure at the operator Stonegate, with the site moving onto the company's leased-and-tenanted estate. It was relaunched by Tina and Juliette, sisters from Coventry with extensive hospitality experience, who took on the venue following a short refurbishment and a relaunch party. The offer centres on cocktails and mocktails, running from classics such as the Pornstar Martini and Aperol Spritz to the bar's own creations, supported by a food menu, small plates and sharers, bottomless brunch, and cocktail-making classes. Aimed at celebrations, after-work drinks, and weekend groups, it combines the historic setting with a lively, party-leaning atmosphere overlooking the Cathedral Quarter. Bayley Lane is one of the oldest streets in Coventry, running through the medieval heart of the city beside St Mary's Guildhall and the ruins of the old cathedral destroyed in the 1940 Blitz, with the modern Coventry Cathedral alongside. That position in the Cathedral Quarter gives Blush and Barrel an unusually historic backdrop for a contemporary cocktail bar. Stonegate, the pub and bar group that operates the site, is one of the UK's largest, and the move to a leased-and-tenanted model under local operators reflects a wider reshaping of its estate. The bar leans on Coventry's student and city-centre crowds, marketing itself around drinks deals, brunches, and group celebrations in a building whose past as a courthouse and jail it openly plays up.
