Bowlers Exhibition Centre

A large exhibition and events centre in Trafford Park, Bowlers occupies a vast hall on Longbridge Road in Stretford, on the industrial fringe of Manchester. The tens of thousands of square feet of clear floor space have made it a flexible venue capable of hosting everything from trade shows to concerts, but it is best known for its place in the history of British dance music. From April 1992, after the closure of the Pleasuredrome, promoters moved their club nights into the cavernous space - an opening event headlined by Carl Cox helped establish it - and through the 1990s Bowlers became a cornerstone of the UK rave scene. Its huge floor, often cited at between 60,000 and 84,000 square feet, hosted multi-arena events such as Life, Helter Skelter, Fantazia, Asylum, and Compulsion, drawing thousands of dancers and sitting alongside the Hacienda in Manchester's clubbing story. Today the adaptable hall is used for a broad mix of conventions, trade shows, exhibitions, sporting events, concerts, and community gatherings, while also hosting large nostalgia events that revisit its heyday. These have included the Manchester Forever rave reunion, billed as a multi-arena recreation of the 1990s scene, and Manchester Adored, a throwback night dedicated to the city's indie heritage of the Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, and Oasis. Trafford Park, one of the world's first planned industrial estates, gives the venue its warehouse-scale footprint and good road access on the western side of the conurbation. The sheer size and flexibility of the space - able to be divided into several arenas for the biggest events - remain its defining features, allowing it to keep staging large-scale gatherings decades after its rave-era peak. Trafford Park was developed from the 1890s as the world's first large planned industrial estate, and the warehouse-scale buildings that resulted gave promoters the kind of cavernous, out-of-town spaces the early rave scene needed. Bowlers' role in that era is remembered alongside the Hacienda as part of Greater Manchester's outsized influence on UK dance music, and recordings of its 1990s nights still circulate among fans of old-skool hardcore and jungle. Its continued use for trade fairs, sporting events, and large reunion raves reflects the same quality that made it work in the first place: a single, adaptable, very large indoor space with the access and parking to move big crowds in and out.
