Brighton Beach

Brighton Beach runs along the seafront of Brighton and Hove on the East Sussex coast, a broad stretch of shingle backed by the city's promenades, Regency terraces and amusements. Unlike the sandy resorts further west, it is a classic pebble beach, sloping down to the sea between timber groynes that divide it into bays and help hold the shingle in place. The beach stretches either side of Brighton Palace Pier, with Madeira Drive and the lower esplanade running along its eastern length and the King's Road and Hove lawns continuing to the west. The seafront is one of the most visited in the country and forms the heart of Brighton's identity as a coastal city. Brighton Palace Pier, with its arcades, fairground rides and food stalls, dominates the central section, while a short distance offshore stand the skeletal remains of the West Pier, a Grade I listed structure left as a striking ruin after fires in the early 2000s. Nearby rises the British Airways i360, a slender observation tower that lifts visitors high above the beach for panoramic views along the coast and inland over the South Downs. The lower promenade between the piers is lined with bars, cafes, fish-and-chip outlets, galleries and small independent traders housed in the Victorian arches, and in the warmer months it becomes a continuous run of outdoor seating and music. The beach also hosts sand-free sports such as beach volleyball, along with watersports operators, a small fishing museum and seasonal events, fairs and markets that spill out along Madeira Drive. Running parallel to the beach is Volk's Electric Railway, recognised as the oldest operating electric railway in the world, which carries passengers along the eastern seafront towards Brighton Marina. This combination of heritage transport, piers and promenade architecture gives the beach a character shaped as much by its built surroundings as by the sea itself. As a public beach, it is free to access at all times and is used year-round, from summer crowds and swimmers to off-season walkers drawn by the open horizon and the city's lively seafront. Its mix of pebble shoreline, landmark structures and dense concentration of bars and entertainment makes it one of the defining outdoor spaces of the south coast.
