Classic Grand.

Housed in a five-storey Victorian warehouse on Jamaica Street in central Glasgow, the Classic Grand is a multi-level live music venue and nightclub with an unusually layered history. The building dates from around 1860 and was originally a commercial warehouse before part of it was converted into a cinema in the early twentieth century, and it has carried a sequence of names and uses across more than a century. It has been a category B listed building since 1970, and retains some of its original Art Deco features. The cinema conversion was designed by the Glasgow architect William B. Whitie, also known for the Mitchell Library, and opened as the Grand Central in 1915 with seating for around seven hundred and fifty. After closing in 1966 the cinema lay unused until it reopened in 1973 as the Classic Grand, on a reduced scale, before becoming the Cannon-Grand in the mid-1980s and finally the Curzon, closing as a cinema in 1992. The building was then used as an amusement arcade and was badly damaged by a fire in 2001. Following renovation, the cinema space reopened as the Classic Grand live music venue, and it has since established itself as one of Scotland's busier mid-sized stages. The multi-level interior, with its surviving period detailing and theatrical character, holds in the region of eight hundred people and lends itself to both seated and standing configurations for gigs and club nights. The venue is known for the breadth of its programming. Alongside live bands and DJ-led club nights it has hosted rock and horror festivals, drag shows, wrestling events, family fun days and cultural celebrations, making it a flexible space that moves well beyond conventional concerts. This willingness to stage a wide range of events has helped it build a varied and loyal audience. Over the years the Classic Grand has welcomed a notable list of performers, from chart and pop acts to internationally known DJs, and has hosted high-profile after-parties. Its blend of historic architecture, central location and eclectic events programme has made it a distinctive and enduring part of Glasgow's nightlife and live-music landscape.
