It operates from a base in the Castlegate area, an unpolished and historically run-down part of town that the collective sees as central to its identity and survival. A large part of what makes Delicious Clam work is its low-cost model. The collective sublets its premises from CADS, a Sheffield charity that provides accessible workspace for creative businesses, which keeps overheads down and allows the savings to be passed on to the musicians who rehearse and record there. This deliberately non-profit-driven approach means the city's musical underground can hone its craft for very little, in a climate where rehearsal and studio time is increasingly expensive. The ground-floor gig space is an increasingly important part of the operation. Reminiscent of the ramshackle DIY venues of Sheffield's past, it hosts intimate live shows that bring in extra income, give local artists somewhere to play and raise the profile of the label.
