Housed in a former 1990s document storage warehouse in Bristol's St Jude's, DOCUMENT is a sprawling creative complex and events venue created by the team behind the city's Motion and Marble Factory clubs. Continuing their focus on building underground communities in former industrial spaces, they took on the empty building in 2019 and gradually filled it with artists, businesses and creatives before launching it as a public events space in 2023. The result is a multi-function site unlike anything else in the city, tucked away on Pennywell Road a short walk from the Cabot Circus shopping district. The venue is conceived as a series of distinct zones rather than a single hall. Its largest space is a three-thousand-capacity event room, supported by a mid-sized pillar and bar room, an intimate stripped-back gallery in a former server room, an outdoor yard and further bespoke areas. Alongside the event spaces sit roughly a thousand square metres of co-working studios, offices and hot desks, a full gym and meeting rooms, giving the building a genuinely mixed daily life beyond its nightlife. As an events destination, DOCUMENT trades heavily on its industrial character, with exposed pipework, raw concrete and skylights lending atmosphere to the cavernous rooms. Drawing on its founders' clubbing pedigree, it hosts electronic club nights and live music as a core part of its programme, having made its name early on with large warehouse raves that packed the main space. The building is deliberately flexible, and its halls are used for far more than music. DOCUMENT stages exhibitions, markets, conferences, product launches, fashion shows and food-and-drink events, and the space is also hired as a film and production set. This breadth reflects its identity as a creative hub and blank-canvas venue rather than a dedicated club. Underpinning all of this is a resident community of creative professionals, with studios occupied by artists, designers, makers and small businesses. By combining workspace, a gym, galleries and one of the city's larger event rooms within a reclaimed industrial building, DOCUMENT has positioned itself as a distinctive home for underground art, music and experimental sound in Bristol.
