The Cause is a celebrated London nightclub known for its DIY ethos, underground programming and strong sense of community. First opened in 2018 in a former car-repair garage in Tottenham Hale, it became one of the most treasured clubs of its generation before relocating in 2023 to a new, fuller home at Dock Road in Silvertown, in the east of the city. The original venue began as a modest 400-capacity space, founded by Stuart Glen and Eugene Wild, who had previously run under-the-radar parties in warehouses and on boats. Working with the local council on a temporary, meanwhile-use basis while the surrounding area was redeveloped, they rapidly expanded the site into a sprawling 1,200-capacity labyrinth of indoor rooms, dance floors and outdoor courtyards, reusing found materials to create its distinctive raw aesthetic. Musically, the Cause built its reputation on underground house, techno and electronic sounds, showcasing some of the UK's best promoters, DJs and live acts on a weekly basis. It also became internationally recognised, hosting names such as Derrick Carter, and won acclaim for an innovative model that combined cutting-edge clubbing with charitable fundraising and support for local collectives and businesses. The club was especially valued for its inclusive spirit, providing a vital home for London's dance-music and queer communities, and proving particularly important during a period when many venues were closing. Its blend of a community garden, cafe and multiple sound systems gave it a character that went well beyond a typical nightclub, earning it industry recognition and a devoted following. After the Tottenham site closed in 2022 and was demolished as part of the area's redevelopment, the Cause reopened at its Silvertown location, continuing its mission with a programme of leading electronic artists. Its journey from temporary pop-up to one of London's defining underground clubs reflects a lasting commitment to community, creativity and forward-thinking dance music.
