The Rainbow Pub Digbeth

The Rainbow is an iconic pub and live music venue on the corner of High Street, Deritend and Adderley Street in the Digbeth area of Birmingham. One of the city's oldest drinking establishments, it traces its origins to a pub on the site dating back to 1767, while the current building is thought to date from the 1880s, giving the venue more than two and a half centuries of history at the heart of Digbeth's nightlife. The pub carries a colourful heritage, including a well-known association with the Peaky Blinders, the historic Birmingham gang whose name is believed to have first appeared in print in 1890 following an incident involving a patron of the Rainbow. This connection to the area's past, later popularised by the hit television series, has added to the venue's mystique and its standing as a genuine Birmingham landmark. After closing in 2017, the Rainbow was given a new lease of life through a substantial restoration reported at around three quarters of a million pounds, reopening in 2021 as an independent live music and entertainment venue. The revived pub combines a traditional bar and cocktail offering with quality food, including a plant-based menu, and a beer garden, alongside a dedicated basement music space with a capacity of around two hundred. Live music has long been central to the Rainbow's identity, with a stage that has hosted artists such as The Heavy, La Roux, Bastille, UB40 and Ocean Colour Scene, as well as countless club nights featuring respected electronic names. The venue was also the scene of a notable campaign in defence of live music against neighbouring development, underlining its importance to the local cultural scene and the wider Digbeth complex of venues. By blending a richly historic pub setting with cocktails, food, live sport and a busy programme of gigs and club nights, the Rainbow offers a distinctive all-round destination in one of Birmingham's most creative districts. Its mix of heritage, hospitality and music has helped restore it to a central place in Digbeth's thriving nightlife.
