The Warehouse

Opened in 1979 by a former American intelligence officer, the Warehouse occupies a converted building on the quiet, cobbled Somers Street in central Leeds and ranks among the most important nightclubs in the north of England. Its founder, Nebraskan Mike Wiand, had been stationed in Yorkshire after a Cold War posting and fell for the county, buying the disused warehouse and designing its first logo himself. The club broke new ground almost immediately, becoming one of the first venues in the country to introduce techno and dance music. It quickly drew clubbers from across the UK to sets by resident DJs such as Greg James and Danny Pucciarelli, and built a national reputation as a pioneer of house and electronic sounds, often counted among the defining venues of the early Leeds scene. Its stage was just as significant as its dancefloor. The Warehouse gave early performances to the likes of Frankie Goes to Hollywood, the Stone Roses and Depeche Mode, hosted the Sisters of Mercy in 1981 and counted Marc Almond among its DJs, while rock figures such as Iggy Pop and the Ramones dropped in over the years, drawing a crowd of new romantics, post-punks and electronic devotees. After a brief closure in 2010 the club reopened in 2013 with a major refurbishment, including a high-specification sound system, lighting and effects. Mike Wiand died in 2014, and the venue has continued to operate in his memory, balancing house and rave nights with live acts and ongoing support for emerging talent, typically opening from late on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. More than four decades on, the Warehouse remains a touchstone of Leeds nightlife, often described as the grandfather of the city's present-day club scene. Its blend of pioneering musical heritage, a colourful origin story and a continuing commitment to new music gives it a singular standing among British clubs.
