Bannermans Edinburgh

Beneath the arches of Edinburgh's South Bridge, in a warren of stone vaults off the Cowgate, Bannermans is the city's enduring home of rock, metal and punk. The main gig room, often called the tunnel because it sits directly under one of the bridge's supports, is a low, atmospheric vault that holds close to 200 people and has hosted loud, heavy music for decades. The building's history runs deep: plaques record a succession of merchants and tradesmen occupying the premises from the late eighteenth century, and the bar takes its name from Julian Bannerman, who bought the property in 1979. It became a dedicated rock bar in the early 1990s, when a promoter began putting on live music and, crucially, providing a full backline so visiting bands needed only to bring their instruments. A later renovation knocked through a dividing wall to roughly double the size of the live room, giving it the near-200 capacity it has today. The venue equips bands with a substantial PA, a lighting rig and experienced sound engineers, and prides itself on doing more for the local scene than any other room in the city. Live music runs most nights of the week, spanning grassroots local acts, rising national names and the occasional established act, with every genre welcome but a clear bias towards the heavier end of the spectrum. The two bar areas keep the place ticking as a pub between gigs, drawing a loyal community of Edinburgh metalheads and punks. That combination of a characterful subterranean room, a band-friendly setup and an unapologetically heavy booking policy has made Bannermans an institution in the Old Town. It remains a fixture of the Cowgate's nightlife and a reliable stop for touring underground bands passing through Scotland. The bar has weathered the pressures faced by grassroots venues across the country, from the pandemic to rising costs, by building a loyal clientele for both its drinks and its consistent run of live music. Forthcoming bills have ranged from sold-out shows by established names to first gigs by emerging local bands.
