Beaver Works

A converted Victorian bed factory in the Hunslet district, just south of Leeds city centre, has been home to one of the north's most distinctive warehouse clubs since 1997. Beaver Works occupies a rambling industrial building on Whitehouse Street, and its raw, multi-room layout and two large outdoor areas have made it a byword for underground party culture in the city. The venue is purpose-suited to big events, with the largest nights spreading across as many as four rooms, each capable of carrying a different sound. Capacities scale with the event, running from a few hundred up to around 2,000, and the building is fitted with serious sound systems, including, by its own account, the only Infra sub-bass setup of its kind in a UK club. Musically the programme runs deep into the underground, crossing techno, drum and bass and the more offbeat reaches of psytrance, though rarely all on the same night. The crowd is drawn by a reputation for affordable drinks, friendly staff and a consistently good-natured party atmosphere that has survived more than a quarter of a century of changing scenes. The outdoor areas provide welcome relief from the heat of the indoor rooms during the marathon events the venue is known for, and have become part of its identity, hosting circus tents, food stalls and fairground touches during its biggest celebrations. The site is wheelchair accessible, with adapted parking, entrance and facilities. Having marked 25 years in operation, Beaver Works remains a fixture of Leeds nightlife and a destination for clubbers from across the region. Its blend of an atmospheric industrial setting, powerful sound and a no-frills, party-first ethos continues to define it as a genuine home of underground dance music. Its longevity in a sector where venues frequently come and go owes much to that loyal following and to a willingness to stage everything from intimate club nights to sprawling all-day festivals across its rooms and yards. The result is a venue as much a part of the city's cultural identity as its more conventional concert halls.
