Cadogan Hall

Built in 1907 as a Christian Science church, Cadogan Hall in Chelsea has been one of London's most admired mid-size concert venues since its conversion in 2004. The Byzantine Revival building on Sloane Terrace, the work of architect Robert Fellowes Chisholm, who also designed the Napier Museum in India, is distinguished by stained glass by the Danish artist Arild Rosenkrantz and was listed at Grade II in 1969. By the mid-1990s the congregation had dwindled and the building fell into disuse. After Mohamed Fayed, then the owner of Harrods, was refused permission to convert it into a private house on account of its listed status, Cadogan Estates, the property company of the Earl Cadogan whose family has owned much of Chelsea since the eighteenth century, bought the building in 2000 to safeguard its future. A refurbishment costing around 7.5 million pounds followed, carried out by Paul Davis and Partners, which installed new lighting and sound systems and bespoke acoustic ceiling modules to adapt the former church into a performance space. The hall reopened in June 2004 with a 953-seat auditorium arranged over a raked floor and gallery. It became the permanent London home of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and has built a reputation as a versatile venue hosting orchestral and chamber concerts, recitals, choral performances and a broad spread of other events, from jazz and world music to talks and corporate functions. Its intimate scale and warm acoustics are frequently praised by performers and audiences alike. Tucked behind Sloane Square in a quiet residential corner of Chelsea, Cadogan Hall combines a distinctive landmark exterior with a comfortable, modern interior. The careful conversion of the old church has given the building a lasting second life as a fixture of London's classical music calendar.
