Edinburgh Corn Exchange

Built by the city as a grain market and officially opened in June 1910, the Edinburgh Corn Exchange is a neoclassical, category-listed building on New Market Road in the Chesser area, a couple of miles southwest of the city centre. Designed in ashlar stone with a columned central loggia, it traded as an agricultural exchange until the decline of the corn business left it largely disused. After being acquired by Marco's Leisure in 1992 and extensively refurbished, the building reopened in 1999 as a concert and events venue, with a main auditorium capable of holding around three thousand standing. Over more than two decades it has hosted hundreds of live shows and welcomed millions of visitors to gigs, conferences, banquets and exhibitions. The roll-call of performers reflects its standing on the touring circuit, with the likes of Blur, Manic Street Preachers, Biffy Clyro, Kaiser Chiefs and Lewis Capaldi all having played its stage. In 2021 it was acquired by the Academy Music Group and rebranded as the O2 Academy Edinburgh, before reverting to its historic Corn Exchange name in 2025 while remaining under the same operator. Beyond the main hall, the venue offers a second theatre space, a large concourse, conference suites and a dedicated rock bar, making it adaptable for everything from headline concerts to weddings and corporate functions. Immediately behind it, the Corn Exchange Village adds ten-pin bowling, indoor football and a sports bar. Set just outside the central business district among retail parks and residential streets, the venue benefits from strong transport links, with the Slateford railway stop close by and direct connections to the city centre and on to Glasgow. The Edinburgh Corn Exchange remains one of Scotland's largest and busiest multi-purpose venues. The surrounding Chesser area, once dominated by the city's cattle and grain markets, has been redeveloped around the venue, and the Corn Exchange remains its best-known landmark. Its blend of heritage architecture and modern production facilities continues to attract major touring artists to the south-west of the city.
