Reclaimed from a dead, disused car park in the centre of Derby, Electric Daisy is an award-winning urban garden, bar and events space that opened in June 2023. The flagship project of community regeneration company Down to Earth Regen, it set out to prove that even the most forgotten city spaces can be transformed into something green and vibrant. At its heart the site is a working community garden, hosting planting days, workshops, talks and family-friendly activities, but from later in the week it operates as a bar and events venue. The programme blends DJ sets, live music and themed parties with daytime markets, brunches and seasonal celebrations, drawing tens of thousands of visitors a year. The space won a Marketing Derby innovation award and even featured on Gardeners' World, reflecting its unusual mix of horticulture, hospitality and culture. Its founders describe an ambition to grow it into a "mini Eden Project" for the city, layering nature, food and events into a single outdoor venue. As an open-air site close to homes, it operates within agreed conditions on the timing and number of louder events, with most activity ending by mid-evening and an outdoor dining area where visitors can pop in for a drink and a pizza. Wood-fired food, real ale and a relaxed, do-it-yourself aesthetic define the experience. Located on Bold Lane near the heart of Derby, a short walk from the cathedral quarter and the city's shops, Electric Daisy offers a distinctly different night and day out from the surrounding bars and clubs. Part garden, part bar and part stage, it has become one of the city's most talked-about independent spaces. The project has been widely cited as an example of meanwhile use, turning derelict urban land into a productive community asset while longer-term plans for the site are resolved. Alongside its events, it runs volunteering schemes, gardening sessions and educational visits, framing the bar and stage as one part of a broader mission to bring nature back into the city centre.
