Exchange Bristol

In 2019 a music venue on Bristol's Old Market Street became the first in the United Kingdom to be owned by its own community, when several hundred supporters bought shares to take the Exchange into collective ownership. The campaign raised the funds needed to secure the building and protect a grassroots stage that had been operating since 2012. Founded by the people behind the Croft, the venue is built around two performance spaces, a main room holding around two hundred and fifty and an intimate basement, allowing it to host everything from sold-out touring bands to small club nights. The dual layout lets it run several events in parallel and nurture artists at the very start of their careers. Its stages have hosted future stars early in their rise, with names such as The 1975, Haim, George Ezra, Idles and Four Tet appearing among hundreds of acts across genres from punk and hardcore to electronic and experimental. That track record has made it a byword for grassroots music in the South West. Community ownership, through a benefit society of local shareholders, gives the venue resilience against the commercial pressures that have closed many similar spaces, and reinvests its success into the building and its programme. All-ages shows, label takeovers and support for local promoters underline its independent ethos. Positioned in the historic Old Market quarter just east of the centre, close to Cabot Circus and the city's transport links, the venue sits in an area long associated with alternative culture. As a pioneering community-owned space, it has become a model for independent venues across the country. Beyond live shows, the building incorporates a record shop and rehearsal rooms, helping to sustain the wider music ecosystem in the surrounding Old Market area. The success of its community share offer has been held up nationally as a template for protecting small venues, several of which have since explored similar ownership structures.
