Nambucca

For well over a century the building at 596 Holloway Road has been a social hub for north London, trading as the Cock Tavern from the 1880s before being reborn in the mid-2000s as Nambucca, a pub with live music at its heart. In that latest guise it became one of the capital's most important incubators for new guitar bands, giving early stages to artists who would go on to fill far larger rooms. The venue's reputation was built on the indie and nu-folk scenes of the 2000s, hosting regular sets from Frank Turner, Marcus Mumford, Laura Marling and Beans on Toast, and providing a base for the wave of London indie led by The Libertines. The Holloways were actually formed at the venue and played their first gig there, and the room has since welcomed the likes of Florence and the Machine, Wolf Alice, The Wombats and Fat White Family. A serious fire in December 2008 gutted the building, and it took nearly two years to reopen; a later closure and major refurbishment saw it relaunch on Halloween 2014 with a redesigned, open-plan layout. The old stage, tucked to one side, was replaced by a large stage at the back of the room for clear sightlines, paired with a new PA, lighting rig and a full backline for visiting bands. Today Nambucca operates as a 300-capacity grassroots venue, with live music and club nights most nights of the week and a front bar serving traditional pub fare alongside the gig space at the rear. Long-running club nights such as This Feeling and Some Weird Sin have made it a home, and the walls carry murals of rock icons from Bowie and Lennon to Amy Winehouse. After announcing closure in 2022 amid the wider pressures facing UK music venues, it reopened under new management in October 2024, continuing its dual life as a community pub and a stage for emerging talent. Set on the busy Holloway Road with strong transport links and close to the Emirates Stadium, it remains a fixture of Islington's live-music scene.
